Escaping the Matrix and Waking Up to What’s Truly Important
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
The Matrix is an operating system controlled by machines. The machines are in full power. They manipulate how we humans feel by tapping into the way we perceive the world. This is carried out by the stimulation of our senses that send signals to the brain that depict our reality. In this state, we have a disillusioned sense of tranquillity, happiness and security. We believe whatever we want to believe. A feeling that we are in control.
At the same time, we are blissfully ignorant. It is this ignorance, combined with a disregard to the truth and a lack of ownership in seeking the truth, that we create the suffering that exists in our lives. (more…)

Time is considered the most valuable commodities around. For the individual time is a precious resource. We are born and then we die. The time we have at our disposal is all that is in-between. The length of which remains undetermined.
There is time outside these parameters. We know of this. We are aware. We read history books of the past, examining the time before our existence. We know that for some period into the future time will carry on. Perhaps infinitely, as long as life and consciousness exist. (more…)

Belongingness – a deep and fundamental human emotion.

Humans are animals and as with many animal groups belonging to social groups provide protection. The social bonds and relationships we form in our networks have been proven to have profound benefits to our overall wellbeing. (more…)

“Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbours, and let every new year find you a better man.” Benjamin Franklin
This is not a practice savoured for New Year’s Day. New Year’s Day is the day to measure our progress. To reflect on the year that has been. To see how well we succeed in the battles with our vices and how truly peaceful we were with our family, friends and neighbours. How truly peaceful we are with ourselves. The goal is not to be better than everyone else, to compare our achievements with the world. The goal is to be a better person. To compare ourselves with who we were yesterday. To know how we feel. What is the underlying motivation behind everything you do?
With a growing fascination in understanding what drives human motivation and behaviours, twelve months ago I begin to ask the guests on my podcast the above question. The answers have been wonderful and surprisingly very consistent. One common theme is the desire to serve, help others and have an impact.
Why am I so interested in what motivates us? I suppose I am deeply curious about human behaviour. It may be a reason to scratch my own itch. Trying to understand why I do, think and say the things that I do. Perhaps I am walking a path of enlightenment or travelling on a road to nowhere, a journey never-ending. (more…)

There is time outside these parameters. We know of this. We are aware. We read history books of the past, examining the time before our existence. We know that for some period into the future time will carry on. Perhaps infinitely, as long as life and consciousness exist. (more…)

The obstacles of life continue to challenge us. Just when we think we are having some positive forward momentum we fall, trip, stumble and sometimes we fail. If it, and usually it does, happen again, and again, and again, it can become difficult to keep moving forward.
Motivation wears thin. Energy is depleted. Emotions surge. Anxiety runs high. Dreams recede. Time slows down and yet the days pass quickly. Habit vs. Skill and The 10,000 Hour Rule
By Leigh Martinuzzi
It was bought to my attention in an interview I did with Zach Schonbrun, author of The Performance Cortex, that habit and skill are two very different matters. Popularised by Malcolm Gladwell, the 10,000-hour rule suggests that by doing any activity repetitively one will master it.According to Andres Ericsson who has spent a lifetime studying the psychology behind expertise and human performance and the source of Gladwell’s research he states that the “10,000-hour rule” is actually not a rule at all.In this episode, I explore my understanding of habit and skill and what was really discovered by Andres Ericsson in regards to the 10,000-hour rule. Developing Creativity
By Leigh Martinuzzi
Creativity is often seen as a novel pursuit, one that is characterised by a false reality combined with some degree of realism. Some might argue that creativity is of little value. There to entertain an individual or group or people with dreams and story. To transport us to a world lacking logic or rationality and therefore usually an activity without any actual purpose.
Is creativity a wasted pursuit?
Does it solely exist to bring joy to the creator?
Does it lack any tangible reward?
Is creativity purposeful to our survival and human progression?
Please allow me to explain my thoughts in this week’s solo rant.
Escape Self-Absorption, Let Go of The Ego
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
We can have everything we want in life by escaping our self-absorption. Everything! It is not that we should deny self-care or self-love. We shouldn’t seek to abandon our search and satisfaction of our primary human needs – food, shelter, belongingness, survival. Self-absorption is allowing the ego to rule and letting it obsess over fulfilling false needs.
The ego attaches itself to trivial matters. It cares not of others or even one’s personal well-being. It concerns itself with misleading ideas on how to protect one’s self-interests and uphold some kind of desirable identity. It does it in ways that are often inconsiderate, lacking compassion and of little long-term purpose. The ego is short-term focused. (more…)

Leadership: A Life-Skill
By Leigh Martinuzzi
Leadership is a skill not only favoured to those who manage large teams or coach at the local football club. I’d consider leadership a life-skill. We should teach it to school children along with several other important life-skills essential for living a successful and happy life.
Why? Because at some point in time, we will be required to lead others whether on a large or small scale. More importantly, we are at all times entirely responsible for the leadership of our life.
You might be thinking, “well, if I am not in a position of such responsibilities then why do I need to develop my leadership skills?”
Listen in and allow me to explain.

Our surface level motivations arise from our core human needs. On a daily basis, it is very unlikely that we make the connection between a surface level motivation and its fundamental source.
Gradual Awakening with Miles Neale
The world may be on the verge of global crisis. The economic, political, ecological and environmental landscapes are at the tipping point. Humanity appears confused and unaware in search of answers. As western culture embraces traditional practices favoured by many religious pursuits people jump on the trends of the likes of meditation and mindfulness yet equally sceptical of spiritual paths. In this conversation with Miles Neale, author of Gradual Awakening, we go beyond the surface and typical mindfulness talk into a deeper look at the current state of humanity. A Hike Remembered – Find What Ignites You (revised)
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
I found myself lost, hiking through an absolutely magical place – the lamington national park. Alone and with my thoughts and a true masterpiece of one of Mother Nature’s beautiful creations!
The splendour and chaotic beauty of nature. The succulent growth of trees, vines, leaves, water, waterfalls, that combine to form a breathtaking piece of art. How grateful that I get to experience such wonder. And truly grateful for those people who act to protect these places. I hope that the future generation may witness and enjoy such experiences.

By Leigh Martinuzzi
Are you interested in the life of an entrepreneur? In this episode, I touch on the reality of becoming an entrepreneur. It’s definitely not for everyone.

Love and Belonging
“I will love you through everything. Can you do yourself the same honor?”
― Scott StabileLove is a powerful energy that lives within us all. It is revealed through actions that act as the social glue that binds humanity together and allows us to share, contribute, protect, understand, collaborate, evolve and progress – united! Its purpose is to connect life, not separate it, and in this state, all life serves a better chance of survival.
Love has many definitions, and I don’t believe it’s all flowers, romance and sex. It goes deeper than this. Love needn’t only occur between two people. Love can be exerted to many, like the love a mother has for all her children or the love a leader has for his people. It doesn’t exist only for those who receive love. Love can be shared with someone that has done wrong by us, even to someone who has murdered. (more…)

It challenges Darwinism and the traditional view that genes are passed along via heredity and instead can move sideways through viral infection. (more…)
Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
In this book, Dr Dan Ariely, A professor of behavioural economics at the Duke University uncovers why humans are predictably irrational. Every day we are responsible for making numerous decisions and what Dan was intrigued by is that despite our assumption that we are smart logical beings, we often make poor decisions that don’t seem logical at all.
Often emotions become entangled in the decisions we have to make. We overvalue, we procrastinate, and we make the same poor decisions time and time again. From his perspective, it seemed humans are highly irrational, hence his research behind this book. (more…)

Why Having a “Plan B” Makes Sense
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Some time ago I was sitting in a recruitment room of about 100 people – mass recruitment at its best, attentively listening while the CEO told us his motivational story hopefully trying to capture our belief in himself and his company. For what it’s worth it worked because as he concluded the presentation the same 100 people just wanted to be part of his dream.
During the talk, he discussed why having a plan B, C or beyond is pointless, ensuring us all that having a plan A is all that is necessary. Plan A, in this case, would be working with his company and so a plan B or other would be pointless and likely indicate a lack of commitment. Why?

Tech – Killing Human Connectivity or is it?
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Technology has been said to come with many great efficiencies. Of course, it does! As we marvel with tech’s rapid and amazing advances we are becoming more aware of how significantly, both positively and negatively, it infiltrates our everyday lives. Digitalisation has a heavy impact on our lives and is now a prominent field of study.
Backed by research there are those who would argue the tech is indeed making life easier for people. Then there are those that would disagree stating that the digital world is killing what it means to connect. What it means to be human.
Many studies suggest that people are less effective at developing interpersonal skills and relationships, unable to share emotions and feelings, and lack an understanding of how to behave in social environments. (more…)

Habit, Skill and The 10,000 Hour Rule
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Andres Ericsson has spent a lifetime studying the psychology behind expertise and human performance. He is internationally recognised for his decades of science-backed research addressing how anyone can develop superior skills and mastery within any field. His most recent book is called Peak that highlights why talent is not innate and how experts are made, not born.
If you’re interested, please check out my book reflection here – Peak.
The 10,000-hour rule, popularised by Malcolm Gladwell, is one of Ericsson’s more well-known areas of study. Ericsson himself states that the “10,000-hour rule” is actually not a rule at all. The 10,000-hour rule suggests that by doing any activity repetitively one will master it. The average time to accomplish mastery is 10,000 hours. This is a common misinterpretation. Doing anything repeatedly for a (more…)

HATE – We All Hate!
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
“The people we discriminate against are in our public politics and in our culture are also the groups of people most likely to be bullied in school. That is not a coincidence. That’s hate!” Sally Kohn

Why do we hate? Perhaps the primary reason for “hate” is that we believe that someone or something may bring threat to our survival. A threat to our tribe. A threat to our Self, our ego! (more…)
Freedom From The Need to Be Busy
A Podcast by Leigh Martinuzzi
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
Hustle! This word has become common tongue in our culture. We’ve become a society obsessed with being busy. Why is there a need to always be so busy? What’s the reason? What is the cause? Is all this “busyness” necessary? Is it tearing our lives apart? Is hustle purposeful to progress? (more…)Developing Creativity
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Creativity is often seen as a novel pursuit, one that is characterised by a false reality combined with some degree of realism. Some might argue that creativity is of little value. There to entertain an individual or group or people with dreams and story. To transport us to a world lacking logic or rationality and therefore usually an activity without any actual purpose.
Is creativity a wasted pursuit?
Does it solely exist to bring joy to the creator?
Does it lack any tangible reward?
Is creativity purposeful to our survival and human progression?

Leadership – A Life-Skill
Succeed in Your Professional & Personal Life
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Leadership is a skill not only favoured to those who manage large teams or coach at the local football club. I’d consider leadership a life-skill. We should teach it to school children along with several other important life-skills essential for living a successful and happy life.
Why? Because at some point in time, we will be required to lead others whether on a large or small scale. More importantly, we are at all times entirely responsible for the leadership of our life.

Questions
A Podcast by Leigh Martinuzzi
“I am just a child who has never grown up. I still keep asking these ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions. Occasionally, I find an answer.” Stephen Hawking
To ask questions is to live with an inquisitive, curious and progressive mind. Questions have the power to enhance the quality of our life. We need to encourage each other to ask more. All questions lead to answers, and all responses have a purpose. Needless to say, no question is a wrong question, the only unfortunate question is one never asked. (more…)
Taping into The Unconscious Mind: A Modern Perspective
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
The unconscious mind is said to control the majority of how we act and behave. Some studies suggest as little as 0.08% of what we process happens on the conscious level. The brain is a marvellous organic operating system that sucks a heck of a lot of energy. To operate efficiently, our system runs on a network of memory and prediction. The unconscious is a powerful sub-system of our brain that helps us automate our lives. If that’s the case, it would make sense to learn how do we tap into the power of the unconscious mind?
Cognitive thought process takes place in the conscious part of the human brain and uses a significant amount of energy. We have to focus our attention, think, study and solve problems. Once we do, we can use the stored memory and unconscious operating system to make future predictions. (more…)
